Emerson F/W 2012: from War to Progress

"Powerful and Free-Spirited," defines the EMERSON woman; her essence is a reflection of sophistication and classic luxury- a woman who is fearless and shameless in indulging her eccentric side.

This season EMERSON's designer Jackie Fraser-Swan worked on several inspirations that ultimately progressed and developed her Fall/Winter 2012 collection for EMERSON. In the early stages Fraser-Swan used the black and white images of post-bombing Europe specifically of Dresden, Germany, a war torn city heavily damaged during WWII. The city initally inspired the designer by its porcelain doll art the 'Dresden Dolls', but as her research of the 1940's expanded, Jackie began exploring the roles of women during the war, and how they took on a masculine role. In the end EMERSON's F/W 2012 collection drew inspiration on the juxstaposition of masculine and feminine aspects in women's style; how their roles in society progressed and their independence of style and beauty grew.

A mix of couture and contemporary, rock and romance, key pieces throughout the collection includes silk capes, abstract ombre wool ponchos, neoprene pants and asymmetrical tops; in shades of purple, plum, and pops of lime green. One must also take notice in the lace details on the dresses, tops, and leggings in throughout the entire collection.

Personally, what I find interesting about EMERSON's aesthetics, and what ultimately sets the designs apart from the meriad of design houses is that EMERSON exudes such a feminine 'baby-doll' look, but also has attributes of being a 'bad-ass' rock-n-roll side; all together working perfectly to tell a complete story. I love that from one ensemble a 'rocker-chick' comes down the runway, but the next one is a refined woman of high social status; coincidently a feminine lady then one who takes charge and conquers life.

Cropped ponchos and the quilted knee length dress were amongst my favorite of the collection. For F/W 2012 season ponchos and capes are hot trends even for menswear, and I'm delighted to see EMERSON incorporated each into the collection well. The ombre wool poncho was a hit as the finale piece; it added such a great ingredient of mystery and mystique.

I look forward to another season of EMERSON, and am intrigued as to what's next for the brand- What inspiration will Jackie Fraser-Swan draw from for her next creation?

Farah Angsana F/W 2012: Global Glamour!

Covering every spectrum on the color wheel, Farah Angsana's 'Global Woman' inspired Fall/Winter 2012 collection was a burst of life and a visual sensation for those who attended her runway show. From ivory and black, to blue, scarlet red, tangerine, emerald green, divine violet; embellished with crystals and sequins, and all skillfully detailed with ruching, lace, and delicate silks- the venue was overcomed with "ooh's and aah's;" sometimes in complete silence as attendees admired each ensemble coming down the runway.
In this collection Farah wanted to convey a woman of high glamour and culture; a woman familiar with luxury and a fixture of high society, and YES! Farah Angsana achieves this flawlessly. In addition to glamourous, global traveller, elegant, and classy, one may describe this collection as sexy and sultry with sheers, peak-a-boo cut outs, and thigh high slit details. Chantilly lace, silk chiffon, silk wool, wool crepe, and tweed lurex luxuriously came together through modern silhouettes- a marriage of perfection.
Though it was a challenge to pick a favorite look through a sea of beautiful gowns and dresses, it was undeniably clear that the finale dress was the definite crowd favorite. The moment this 'Shanghai Blue Dragon Scale Embellished Tulle Gown" with the sheer illusion came down the runway, flashes of lights from cameras became blinding as everyone clamoured to take a picture of the stunning gown! As I described the moment, "It was that special moment during fashion week when one's senses are awakened, and one is overcomed with anticipation of what will inspire, and what will the designer create next season?"
The level of creativity, the attention to detail, the embodiment of luxury, and just her love for her craft, made 3 seasons of trying to press cover Farah Angsana's show worthwhile. When I finally got the invite to attend Farah Angsana's runway show I couldn't contain my excitement, sitting front row was 'icing on the cake,' and in the end I was in disbelief; left with a feeling of EUPHORIA!

Candela F/W 2012: Western Gold

Each season I always expect Candela to transport me to another world through a story told beautifully through period inspired ensembles. Drawing inspiration from the bygone days of the 'gold-rush' and the communities that formed almost overnight with people in search of a dream, Candela's Fall/Winter 2012 collection was a wonderful mix of conservative vintage Victorian Era and modern silhouettes.
What I love most about every Candela collection and this one is no exception, is the sense of adventure it takes one, almost being part of story it's trying to convey. One such ensemble that instantly caught my eye was the hunter green cable knit cardigan with the southwest patterns paired with the gold and silver skirt. One can see how it ties into the concept of that 'gold-rush' migration through the sweater, but definitely modern through the skirt and crocodile loafers. Other note worthy pieces were the faux fur vest with toggle button closure over a cropped leather jacket,and the baby doll navy sequin dress.
Candela's F/W 2012 collection was a great blend of past and present but modern in every cut and silhouette. One can definitely appreciate the simplicity and youthful glow of Candela.

General Idea F/W 2012: "After Games"

Bumsuk Choi takes a leap into the past for inspiration for General Idea's F/W 2012 collection. Using archived images of hockey players specifically during the 1968 Winter Olympic games, Bumsuk references the lean mid-century silhouette and infused it with General Idea's modern take on utilitarian and athletic menswear. The end product resulted in a transformation of sportswear uniforms translated into everyday ready-to-wear.
The 'After-Games' concept brought on trousers with knee pad details, parkas with quilted fabric accents, and varsity jackets with toggle buttons; all in earthy color pallettes such as olive green, beige, burgundy,, and punched with dark oranges and dark blue hues. Key details that is repeated throughout the show is the outdoor sportsman, and how he can find protection from the elements- this along with athletic details completes the entire Fall/Winter 2012 collection.
Each season I'm always left wanting every jacket out of the General Idea collection, fur hooded fleece lined parkas, and quilted fabric jackets all capture my attention, and this season was no exception! From the vests, sweaters, and to every trouser that came down the runway, I wanted to add every piece to my wardrobe. I love that Bumsuk continued the drop crotch trend along with ankle cropped slim fit trousers.
Sporty+Utilitarian+Modern Classics combined sums up another great season filled with outstanding clothes for General Idea's runway show, and again I look forward to another season!

After the Oscars, one of the biggest party in town is the Vanity Fair Party, everyone who's anyone in tinsel town goes to the this party to rub elbows with peers and industry leaders- Im hoping to talk about the next great project!
With all the debate about her Red Carpet gown, I know Jennifer Lopez must be thinking "Kiss my Ass Bitches!" because she looks absolutely stunning in this copper shimmer Zuhair Murad dress. I still loved her red carpet gown, and this is just the icing on the cake.
Actually the after party pictures were dominated by lovely latin beauties. Sofia Vergara is amazing in her Roberto Cavalli dress, and Salma Hayek drop dead gorgeous in her crimson red Yves Saint Laurent gown.
Elizabeth Banks was another favorite in her feather detailed dress by Chadwick Bell, I knew this was a red carpet worthy dress when I saw it come down the runway during NYFW, and she pulled it off well!
Now, where's my damn invite to the party? Most importantly what would I wear???

White was definitely the color stunning on the red carpet in this year's Oscars. From Gwenyth Paltrow's cape divine by Tom Ford, to Jennifer Lopez's super sultry Zuhair Murad gown, and to Octavia Spencer's sparkling curve flattering Tadashi Shoji number- white with a touch of sparkle conquered the infamous RED CARPET!

I have to admit that I expected colors to take main stage for the red carpet simply because the past few award ceremonies colors exploded worn by the biggest names in the industry. Yet, I was not disappointed at all! Octavia was absolutely beautiful in her Tadashi Shoji gown with sparlking details from head to toe. Octavia's dress hugged her in all the right curves and accentuated the best parts while slimming her all throughout. And of course Jennifer Lopez's low cut bustline and peek-a-boo shoulder detailed Zuhair Murad floor sweeping gown just catapults her into another level of fashion stardom. On a side note, it bothers me to no end when a panel of so-called fashionistas make off the chart comments (specially when it touches a bit of bigotry) and they themselves have no style! So E! Red Carpet please choose your panel better next time!!

Simple yet attention commanding Gwenyth Paltrow's Tom Ford cape structured dress was so elegant and just gave Gwenyth such a statuesque figure.

Who can forget a long standing member of the 'best-dressed' club Angelina Jolie. Her thigh high slit Atelier Versace velvet black gown was another 'frills-free' ensemble I found sultry but understated, and solidifies Angelina's 'best-dressed' crown.

Several note worthy stars and dresses were that of Glen Close in her forest green Zac Posen gown with a corset top, I felt she could have done without the jacket, but otherwise a great look. Another is Cameron Diaz in Gucci and Tina Fey in her Carolina Herrera peplum dress. Penelope Cruz also looked divine in her Armani Prive gown in soft powder blue, but I would of liked for it to be cleaner and done without the wrap detail in the bustline going around, if it were more of a corsetted top I think it would of made a world of difference.

Overall, the expected 'best-dressed' came and reigned for another Oscars night, and happily we can add a full figured talent like Octavia Spencer into the mix to give the other ladies a run for their 'crown'.

Carlos Luna F/W 2012: Argot Collection

Drawing inspiration from the 'secret language' of the Argentinian Tango, reflecting its sensuality, romance, and sophistication; infused with a Parisian lifestyle- Carlos Luna's F/W 2012 collection reflected the seduction of the Tango; becoming the 'Argot Collection'. From delicate fabrics of silk and chiffon, to structured leather, and rich alpaca wool, to eco friendly and alternative faux fur, each ensemble came together like a seasoned dancer performing her magic. The collection was a marriage of perfect opposites, for example the 'Gotan Dress' consisted of elements like gentle silk paired with a more masculine leather trim, and yet both come together through the designer's vision beautifully.

Having the opportunity to press cover the crazy madness of the backstage prepping area, and pass the hectic hustle and bustle of models changing in and out of outfits, volunteer dressers frantically preparing each model, and designers doing last minute fine tuning and making last minute changes, I was able to see the clothes up close and can appreciate the time and work designers like Carlos Luna painstakingly put into his creations.

One such ensemble which I found just breath taking (pictured above) was the oversized hooded faux fur vest with the complementing arm warmers, one can't help be drawn by the representation of luxury that the piece exuded, and although it's meant for a woman, I find that with a bit of 'tweeking' I myself would wear the piece! Another striking piece was the cranberry color mohair trench coat with the leather trims and belt. In fact, as it hung on the rack, myself and Isaiah Garza of (www.fashionmunster.com), discussed how amazing the jacket was and what outfit would he wear with it for next season's New York Fashion Week (MBFashionweek / Nolcha Fashion Week).

I can certainly go on for pages describing how I swoon over Carlos Luna's F/W 2012 collection, but as they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words," but before I wrap this up I must make mention to Carlos Luna how appreciative I am to be able to press cover his runway collection, and I am looking forward to collaborating with such a great talent in the future.

Tadashi Shoji F/W 2012: Opulence

Tadashi Shoji's Fall/Winter 2012 collection revisits a time of opulence and decadence during Shanghai's Golden Age. Rich fabrics of lace, chiffon, silk, and velevet lend to a vibrant era of 'rich' fashion. Drop waist dresses, draped backless velvet gowns, and precision cut chantilly lace all grace Tadashi's runway reminiscing to a time when Shanghai was celebrated as the "Paris of the Orient."

Chantilly lace was the main star on the runway for the collection, modernized and well crafted, it was a show stopper in colors of crimson red, and midnight blue. Cut in a tiered overlay, each dress moved so seductively on the runway, like a woman silently flirting across the way- one swoons!

Tadashi's runway show is always a delight to press cover beacuse each season is such a departure from the previous that it's always unpredictable, and in fashion predictability most always equates boredom.

The juxstaposition between Tadashi Shoji's spring 2012 collection and his fall 2012 is uncanny. For spring his clothes exuded innocence and blossoming flora, and for his fall collection one was transported to a time of opulence and extravagance, when women walked with a overtly sexual confidence- I love that each season I am left wondering what the next collection will bring!!

For Fall/Winter 2012 I am certainly left thinking about the gorgeous floor sweeping crimson red velvet dress with the low cut back punctuated with a lace beaded design (first picture above). The dress came down the runway beautifully, but as it left one was breathless!

I do look forward to another season and another breathtaking collection from Tadashi Shoji, and one thing I can be certain about is that it will be a total surprise!!!!!

JSong Way F/W 2012: "Songs for Nature"

A fantastic breath of fresh air as JSong Way uses nature for inspiration during its Fall/Winter 2012 collection runway show. "Song for Nature" as its theme, natural fabric like cashmere, wool, and shantung are all woven into a collection of impeccable craftsmanship. Warm colors like butter, plums and grape, deep black, and fresh snow white give life to the clothes as nature does to all living things.
One can definitely appreciate the inspiration of nature because it brings all things back to its simplest form, it allows one to take a moment and thoroughly enjoy the beauty of the clothes without having to dissect it like we often do in this industry. In this case I truly appreciated the simplicity of the streamlined shirts punched with geometric "Origami" formed jackets, and the leaf designed dresses and skirts tied everything together flawlessly.
I think in today's ever changing and rapidly moving society, specially in this fashion industry where we are always looking forward and always depending on technology to create the 'New' we often forget that beauty is all around us- in the form of nature. Jsong Way's F/W 2012 collection is a wonderful reminder that in its purest form clothes can be breathtaking- without any gaudy and glitz neccessary!
Without a doubt I must mention the grape colored layered leaf design dress (pictured 1st above), it has the delicate elegance so often found in nature, but also has a strength in the design. I can almost see an armor like quality in the dress which intrigues me more and more as it came down the runway.
Nature is the where all beauty is inspired, and JSong Way F/W 2012 captures the very essence of beauty and translate it precisely into clothing.

Anne Bowen F/W 2012: An Experiment in Beauty

Decadent, Audacious, Graphic...are adjectives used to describe Anne Bowen's Fall/Winter 2012 collection.
Inspired partly by Aleksandr Rodchenko ( a Russian artist, sculptor, photographer, graphic designer, and founder of Constuctivism in design), the collection was a meriad of geometric silhouettes, metal embellishments, amazing beading, and rich textures all creating a modernist mood. Using silk organza, chiffon, wool crepe, jersey knits, and charmeuse Anne Bowen's F/W 2012 collection had a strong yet delicate balance in each ensemble.
Anne Bowen is well known for amazing bridal couture and formal wear, but this collection blew everyone away as strong metal embellished pieces and almost glam warrior like dresses came down the runway. One felt that this was almost a statement of rebellion for the designer proving that a chameleon changes with its environment. The beauty of the collection was in the risk it took and that it was unexpected.
My absolute favorite stunner was the asymmetrical hem metal dress with the chain purse to complement. The piece was stunning without being gaudy and too over the top, and it had a wonderful marriage of glamour and edge which is a testament to great design.

Blanc De Chine F/W 2012: Timeless Classics

As Blanc De Chine approaches its 20th anniversary in 2013, it returns to its roots of 'timeless classic' designs proving why the house is the first Chinese international luxury label to successfully translate Chinese culture into today's fashion and still continues its momentum since it first opened its retail shops in 1993.
Traditional Chinese fashion is identified by these signature looks, the Zhong Shan suit, the Qi Pao, the Chinese Tunic, the Shanghai jacket, and the Mien O, and every season Blanc De Chine manages to keep the balance between traditional and modern with impeccable tailoring and touches of refinement.
For the past 3 seasons I have covered Blanc De Chine's collection showing, and each time I am impressed by the continuity of the designs. I love that the house and its designers keep focus on quality and elegant simplicity, rather than falling prey to the hype of glitz and glamour that lead to many designer's pitfall. One can appreciate a soft spoken elegance and excellent tailoring when it comes to Blanc De Chine, and as a high end design house it's important that the consumers see quality in each ensemble- for me that defines LUXURY!
One detail that I find to be a dying art is 'pleating' whether it's micro pleating or wide fan pleating. I am happily surprised that Blanc De Chine's designer sent out several looks that re-awakened my love to gorgeous well executed pleating- such a piece being the one side pleated cape. Other looks that were simply eye catching and such a runway delight was the sequined jumpsuit and floor length dresses, again sexy while maintaining elegance. Yet, I must admit that my all time favorite piece and partly due to my facination with all things 'caftan' is the detailed designed v neck caftan (first picture above). When skillfully done such as this piece, a caftan can have the same allure as any fitted dress or high hemmed skirt, I find that when a woman's silhouette is fit amazingly and the fabrics on the side of the caftan flails in the air, it's like watching a beautiful butterfly take flight.
Now, a Blanc De Chine collection would never be complete without mentioning the un-rivalled tailoring of its menswear. Hidden button or one button jackets are staples in each Blanc De Chine collection and with luxurious velvet and silk fabrics, every well dressed gentleman needs one in his wardrobe.
Each season I absolutely look forward to attending the Blanc De Chine runway show, it begins my fashion week on the right foot, and definitely sets the bar high for all proceeding shows.

Emilio Cavallini F/W 2012 : Risque Business

It's easy to cross the boundaries between sexy+trashy and sexy+classy, and with Emilio Cavallini it's clear that sexy+classy+edgy can all be married harmoniously. The Italian based lingerie designer Cavallini shows how lingerie can be transformed into a ready to wear garment by simply editing in another piece such as a skirt, a top, or a jacket and how a well crafted undergarment can be readily worn and in fact enhance an entire ansemble.
After the presentation a few attendees, myself included, discussed how there is such a fine line between 'canal street' or 'madison avenue' worthy lingerie, and we all agreed how Emilio Cavallini's designs feel high end and epitomizes the essence of true 'Italian Sexiness' refined yet very alluring.
One of my favorite piece was the jewel detailed control top and complementing stockings. It's such an unexpected piece amongst the lace, sheer, and paisely designs of the rest of the collection, and it's an eye catching piece with a little bit of bling to grab one's attention.

Norisol Ferrari F/W 2012: Seductive Power of Glamour

"Jean Harlow meets Tina Turner in Mad Max." It's funny how the previous night I made a comment to another fashion week attendee how I wished someone would bring back the hard edge fashion in Mad Max specially the low cut chain mail dress Tina Turner wore during the thunderdome fight scene, and behold early the next day the fashion gods have heard my comment and brings Norisol Ferrari.
The idea of bringing seductive glamour and marrying it with a hard edge produces such a spectacular 'coat of armor' as Norisol's design exemplifies. In this case several marriages work perfectly together, Vintage+Modern and Glamour+Edgy. One particular piece that caught my eye instantly was "La Donna" the floor length chocolate cashmere coat with the fox collar trim. Its silhouette is sleek and modern, but with vintage details of the fur collar and the bell sleeves. Even next to a hard edge design with a stunning head piece, the La Donna's regal simplicity still stood out to me because it just had a feel of luxury and timeless quality.
Another standout piece was the "Lana" a python and lace strapless gown in nude with a
complementing high collar bolero jacket. Though another nude seems monotone it is the intricate lace details in the dress coupled with a python detail that makes this dress red carpet worthy.
Overall, I understood the story Norisol Ferrari was trying to tell, and I felt the collection kept a nice balance of strong and delicate and vintage and modern.

Victor De Souza F/W 2012 : Press Release

Dior Homme F/W 2012-2013: Uniform Dior!

Inspired by the simplicity and utilitarian nature of uniforms, Dior Homme's creative director Kris Van Assche puts his own unique spin on what uniforms can potentially become created through Dior for Homme Fall/Winter 2012-2013.

Certainly Assche steered away from the expected ankle cropped trouser trends for menswear F/W 2012-2013, by using full length pants throughout his collection. I find it commendable that Kris Van Assche brought Dior Homme on its on fashion path rather than just being another designer following what's trending at the moment. Using clean lines and structured utilitarian designs it may lack the flair and glitz like many of its contemporaries, but amazing tailoring proves that classic clothing never needs glitz and glamour to be stylish and eye catching. Sometimes, staying true to the classics produces outstanding work.

My personal favorite of the collection, is the knee length poncho both in the bird print and the olive green. I am always impartial to the unique and different pieces, and throughout any menswear show this piece is a definite eye catcher.

What makes Dior Homme F/W 2012-2013 interesting is that its not confined to one silhouette or aesthetic, some pieces were slim fit and others were oversized and often very cozy looking, and this is why season after season Dior stands out from the rest of fashion.

Givenchy menswear F/W 2012: Bold Rebellion!!

Bold reds, and rebellious skirts have certainly gained momentum in the Givenchy menswear collection. Riccardo Tisci's 'gothic wear' aesthetics is certainly still apparent season after season but heightened with bold colors and amazing fabrics for his menswear F/W 2012 collection.
When Givenchy first introduced men's skirts in its runway shows it was met with indifference, and criticism by the fashion elite, but talent and impeccable work always trumps doubt. Alongside perfect tailored red suits, men's skirts are now an undeniable statement piece for any Givenchy collection.
The perfect marriage of bold colors, masculine+feminine juxstaposition, and a rebellious matador bull ring on the models, one must admit that Givenchy has brought fashion to its new podium, this is the proverbial new frontier in fashion and Riccardo Tisci is pioneering the way.
Regardless of whether one may disagree that skirts will be a fashion norm for menswear, or a simple fad to gardner attention, like anything in fashion- unless it's debatable it's not note worthy. Personally, I may not wear every ensemble as is on the models, but that's the beauty of having key statement pieces, one may take a jacket, a shirt, or a trouser from each ensemble and incorporate it into one's existing wardrobe.
In summation I must admit I swoon over Givenchy, and in this particular collection I do feel several pieces are wearable straight off the runway, and separate each piece is a wonderful addition to any man's closet. Argue one may, but fashion is forever moving forward and Riccardo Tisci is undeniably leading this crazy industry into uncharted territory.

Yves Saint Laurent menswear F/W 2012-2013: Tailored Leather

Since taking the helm for Yves Saint Laurent, Stefano Pilati continues the rich history of the house and its impeccable tailoring and timeless silhouettes. Many fashion enthusiast may criticize Pilati for his lack of use of color and sometimes overly drab pallette, but I for one praise his aesthetics and how he stays true to what he sees as luxurious clothes modernized.

YSL's menswear F/W 2012 collection reminds one of the 1960's era Moscow, well tailored espionage, a bit dark, mysterious, but overall alluring with a sexy air of 'James Bond-esque'. Although the inspiration is vintage, one can clearly see from the slim fit jackets and vests, to the skinny leg ankle cropped trousers on luxe wool textiles that the cut and silhouette have definitely been modernized.

Throughout Men's FashionWeek one of my favorite pieces are the trench coat length jackets whether in leather or wool. In YSL's case (1st Picture Above) the fur lined lapel and collar trench coat is one show stopper that I fell in love with and is a must have for any fashion closet.

Another mention worthy about this collection is how leather trims were skillfully incorporated into classic conservative pieces like a double breasted blazer and jackets. In many cases such a risk would cheapen an ensemble, specially a 3 piece suit, but in YSL's case leather trims only help exude refinement and class throughout the collection.

Costume National F/W 2012: The Future is NOW!

Ennio Capasa for the past decade has been promoting his concept of 'EVOLUTION' while staying true to his core inspiration of Rock'n Roll in the Seventies.

Using today's technology to his advantage, Capasa creates minimalism with laser cut fabrics, pantone colors, and futuristic silhouettes for Costume National. Ankle cropped trousers, drop crotch pants, and double breasted jackets all came down the runway and right on trend for Costume National menswear F/W 2012 collection.

My favorite look of the collection is the opening look with the monotone beige cropped trousers, the knee length knit sweater, and two-button blazer. Though it's a bit monotone and plain, the chicness comes from its clean lines and modern textures.

Other key pieces that I found interesting throughout the collection are the forest green pieces, from trousers to tops and cropped jackets each ensemble screamed modern minimalism perfection.

Jean Paul Gaultier F/W 2012: Hit the Wall!

Literally, Jean Paul Gaultier has 'Hit the Wall', a fashion brick wall for his menswear F/W 2012 collection. With brick wall prints on tops, bottoms, and jackets it's a wall of fashion bricks going down the runway.

I must admit that this is definitely not my favorite Jean Paul Gaultier runway only because I don't see the story or a cohesive thought that brings all the clothes into one picture, but certain pieces of the collection I simply crave.

Pictured above, the fur lined sleeveless jacket paired with a two-button black blazer is a must have piece any fashionista needs in his fashion repertoire. I don't know if it's just me, but I can't see the appeal in the brick print pieces, yet I must admit it is buzz worthy in the fashion world and in true form characteristic of Jean Paul Gaultier.

My other favorite of the collection is the camel wool trench jacket with the leather cuff detail on the sleeves and fox fur collar. Amazing oversized lapel detail and leather trims simply makes this jacket stand above the crowd, it's luxurious yet street edgy- a perfect marriage of opposites.

Whether one loves this Jean Paul Gaultier collection or feel a bit in different about it, like everything in the fashion world it is up to one's interpretation that makes a collection interesting- in fashion you are nothing if no one talks about you, and in this case since this collection is up to debate it is EVERYTHING!!

Damir Doma F/W 2012: Nomadic Chic

When I look at Damir Doma's menswear F/W 2012, I am taken back to the days when Genghis Khan ruled mainland Asia and the steppes of Eastern Europe.

Although Damir Doma's silhouette is loose fitting and oversized, it still maintains a chic edge due to its dark mysterious persona. I am a definite fan of this nomadic quality to the collection, the layered oversized look with tribal print fabrics and fur vests feels so fresh and modern even though it's inspiration is almost 1000 years old.

I must admit I am a bit biased to anything that involves a great fur vest, and for a collection that exudes edge but still feels comfortable and wearble daily, I am a definite fan.

One upcoming trend that this collection has now become a part of is the cropped pants, runway after runway many of the trousers presented has been cropped either ankle length or higher, and that being said the blasphemy of wearing 'high-water pants' or 'floods' is now a major trend that's going to continue into Fall/Winter 2012.

DSQUARED2 F/W 2012: Class in Session

Class is in session and the subject is 'Cool Style'. The reality is that no matter what the story line, DSquared2 always marry cool and sexy effortlessly, and its F/W 2012 menswear collection is no exception.

Slim fitted sihouettes define what DSquared2 is about, and eye catching trims are the proverbial icing on the cake for each piece that Dean and Dan Caten create. My personal favorites in this collection are the metal and jewel studded jackets. The heavier fur lined and fur hooded jacket is a definite fashion must have, unlike other overly decorated jackets this one does actually does its purpose of keeping one warm, but still keeps an edge with its eye catching sleeves.

Another personal favorite is the green mohair sweater, its simple but has the feel of luxury. Many would feel they have to stay away from this kind of texture fearing it might be uncomfortable or bothersome, but from personal experience it's not as difficult to wear or take care of as many people claim.

All I can say is that if all schools specifically where I went is this fashionable, stylish, and well put together, I may have never left! When class is in session and DSquared2 is teaching, all fashionistas and lovers of style need to pay attention.

Trussardi Menswear F/W 2012 : the 70's Live On!!

Trussardi continues to draw inspiration on retro styles for its menswear F/W 2012 collection. The flambouyance of the 70's era with Trussardi's refined impeccable aesthetic becomes a marriage of fashion perfection.
From oversized lapels, trench leather coats, checkered suits, and overall a suave sense of style, these are all characteristics that make the 70's such a great fashion era for men's style. A sleek turtle neck paired under an amazingly tailored double breasted jacket brings back the days when men actually took the time and cared about their style and appearance.
Fur collar trench coats and heavy velvet blazers keeps that edgy cool and effortless style. Although I am a little bit unsure about the revival of the 70's signature 'bell-bottom' I am surely a huge fan of the jackets and tops reminiscent of the era.
Trussardi is definitely pioneering the resurgence of vintage style, and I for one am loving all the fashion that comes from it; I love the idea of turning a 3 piece suit into a casual everyday ensemble by simply using fun vibrant textiles and modernizing it with today's silhouette.

Louis Vuitton menswear F/W 2012: Bold Prints on Classic Pieces

Louis Vuitton is synonymous to LUXURY, particulary in hand bags and leather goods. For several seasons the House's ready-to-wear line has slowy but surely come up to the same standards as its accessory counterpart.

For Louis Vuitton's menswear F/W 2012 classic pieces are punched with bold patterns and colors, as well as exotic animal imprints like crocodile- as seen on one of the jackets. Rich wool fabrics are incorporated well into some uber conservative 3 piece pinstripe suits, and with a twist on the arms using a crocodile skin imprint. Although a few of the pieces are monotone and tone on tone, Im still drawn in just because it is so well crafted and the detail is impeccable.

Without a doubt the chunky oversized zig zag print scarves are the star of the show, from burgundy to navy to gray and camel it is the right statement piece to pair up with a conservative wool jacket to give it a an eye catching accessory. I have to mention that YES! I do want one of each color, it is one of those must have item that any fashion enthusiast needs to add to his ensemble.

Etro Menswear F/W 2012-2013: Fringe, Feathers, and Fur

Fringe, Feathers, and Fur were skillfully incorporated into Etro's signature paisley prints and retro-avant-garde designs. Etro's menswear F/W 2012-13 collection was a mix of western/native designs married into Etro's romantic designs and slim silhouettes. Keeping in trend with the revival of ponchos, capes, and trench coats in heavy velvets, fur lined jackets, and impeccable tailoring, Etro stands out from the crowd by keeping true to its signature paisley prints by making it bolder as a true statement piece.

My favorite ensemble of the collection (pictured above) is the paisely infused trench jacket with the matching shirt, and pinstripe gray trousers. Although attention grabbing because of the boldness of the prints, it still maintains a refined quality because of the tailoring of the jacket.
Other note worthy pieces are the brocade jacket, the fringe detail scarves, the wool ponchos, bold color velvet tops and pants, the feather detailed jackets on the backside, the head pieces, and definitely the shoes.
What attracts me to Etro is that each season and collection after collection the design stays true to its original prints, but somehow still brings innovation and a fresh take on a classic piece. Etro is defined by the quality of its tailoring and the boldness of its prints, and there is no need to ever stray from such a perfected formula.

My Style Icon: Nickelson 'Nick' Wooster (Neiman Marcus Group)

On many occasions during New York Fashion Week S/S 2012, I ran across and shared a space with this guy not realizing who he is or who he works for, only that he stood out to me as a 'fashion bad-ass'. Although in a suit and tie, Nick always had a statement piece that made him stand out from the fashion crowd, and that's what makes one a fashion icon in my book. Style is something effortless and subtle, but undeniably noticable.

In January 2010 Nick Wooster was appointed as the Men's Fashion Director for Neiman Marcus Group which includes Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, and with an impressive resume to back him. John Bartlett, Ralph Lauren, Barneys, Calvin Klein, and Bergdorfs are all included in his work.

I'm not above admitting that I do aspire to get on Nick Wooster's level. Iconic by definition because even in such a corporate position where stuffy suits and ties rule the day, Nick Wooster manages to be a 'fashion bad-ass'.

Give Me Givenchy: S/S 2012 Menswear/ Women's RTW

I definitely find it intriguing that for S/S 2012 both menswear and women's RTW (ready-to-wear) share a subtle juxtaposition of exhibiting a characteristic from one another. If one compares each collection to the other you can clearly see that the majority of the womenswear is highly menswear inspired. From tuxedo blazers and trousers to masculine structured jackets, several pieces from the S/S 2012 RTW collection have an air of masculinity but still very much defined by a sexy silhouette. Another great example to my point is the accessories worn by the women. The silver oversized shark tooth necklace is a strong statement piece, but skillfully difused by setting it on a pastel colored back drop.

To argue the same point for the menswear, one could say that the skirts, with the amazing back pleating alludes to the idea it could be womenswear inspired. The softer slimmer sihouette for the trousers and jackets in the men's collection also supports my observation, but by pairing it with a complementing t-shirt, and using strong bold colors it still maintains a strong masculine feel.

Overall, this is just my over analytical observation for both collections, and it would never take away from the fact that the House of Givenchy is one of the greatest design houses today, timeless and with Riccardo Tisci at its helm sexy, edgy, and innovative.

It's Dolce and Gabbana Bitch! Men's F/W 2012

One of my favorite designer, Dolce and Gabbana, references early 20th century and the Victorian Era fashion with a modern twist of sexy and luxury for its F/W 2012 menswear show. Fur lined trench coats, chunky knit wool suits, and gilded brocade ensembles with complementing footwear came down the runway in one of the best conceptualized fashion story. The tailoring was impeccable and the detail on each piece gave each one a vintage feel, yet so luxuriously modern. From the capes, to jackets, and unbelivable velvet pieces- the collections screams of opulence.
My favorite was the finale look: a gray velvet jacket with intricate brocade detailing and fringe accents on the upper arms. Another ensemble I find so luxurious but easily wearable from the runway to the streets is the gray chunky knit suit with the belted jacket. If I could I would certainly take home every piece of the collection, and can't wait for the day when I can personally sit in the show during Men's Fashion Week in Milan, but for now the dream certainly continues...

Golden Globes 2012 Hottest and Brightest Stars!!

I'm ecstatic to see that this year luxurious colors and svelt sexy silhouettes are back on the red carpet for the 2012 Golden Globes. There may have been an abundance of mermaid tail dresses, but each of the 'hits' were definite stunners and drop dead gorgeous; leading the pack is the ever gorgeous Sofia Vergara in peacock feathers detail Vera Wang. Of course sought after designers such as Atelier Versace, Gucci, Dior, Giles, Giorgio Armani, Nina Ricci, Zac Posen, Ferragamo, and Marchesa are amongst my choices for best dress and tuxedo suits on the carpet for the Golden Globes this year.

Pamella Roland S/S 2012 : Frame Worthy!

During fashion week after several days of insanity and practically living on the New Jersey transit and train, I rushed to upload pictures and without verifying if everything was done completely I erased my memory card and went back to the tents. Sadly one of the shows that didn't upload was the Pamella Roland presentation. Everything from the clothes to the picture I took with Nigel Barker (Judge on America's Next Top Model) and his wife, and several other celebrities..all gone!
After searching my phone I found one picture and it was of the piece that I found exemplified the story and the entire collection. Though the entire collection was stunning, I felt drawn to the glitz of the sequins and how it was applied skillfully like splashes of paint unto a textile canvas. Then, it all made sense, the story of the collection was made cohesive with the clothes being presented through picture frames because the clothes themselves were a magnificent work of art. Literally, the mermaid cut dresses were stunningly covered in sequins ranging from all colors of the turquois sea, or in alternating black and white.
It's definitely a shame that I wiped out all my pictures of the presentation, and I hope to get another chance during F/W 2012.

Norman Ambrose S/S 2012

Inspired by, "the Sun glistening on the Mediterranean like a sea of diamonds", Norman Ambrose epitomizes the word "Luxurious" for his S/S 2012 collection. Every piece was a jaw dropping ensemble a combination of sexy and demure was a marriage of perfection. Gold, silver, platinum, onyx, emeralds, and copper shine flawlessly on sexy shear dresses and on refined one piece jumpsuits. For me the Norman Ambrose S/S 2012 collection alludes to a story of a vacation in St. Tropez that ends with a red carpet moment in Monaco and jet setting to India and attending the court of some wealthy Maharaja.

Obviously, my favorite piece of the collection (first picture above) was the gold brocade jumpsuit paired with the golden bolero and gold belt. A few designers attempt to create a jumpsuit, but I feel the material they use such as satin or light cotton make their pieces seem cheap, but because in this case a heavier brocade fabric was used it screamed luxury! Another one that I love and feel it would look amazing on Jennifer Garner is the blush embroidered tulle evening gown (look #19). The detailing on the waistline and the flexes of platinum and rose gold on the bottom border of the gown glisten spectacularly.

Finally,one has to mention the sunset copper dressing gown and beaded swimsuit (look #23) the last picture. This piece was breath taking and simply jaw dropping as it floated through the runway like a butterfly, and the copper color - J'Adore!

I felt that Norman Ambrose S/S 2012 collection had an amazing story that was expressed brilliantly through clothes.

Monique Lhuillier S/S 2012

After several seasons of trying feverishly to get into one of the most coveted shows of New York Fashion Week and the entire fashion industry, I felt so blessed and fortunate to be able to cover the Monique Lhuillier S/S 2012 show- and to get front row, AMAZING! (check the video)

World renowed and sought after by celebrities and social elites alike for her bridal couture, Lhuillier steps out and amazes the fashion world with an equally stunning RTW line mixed in with elegant couture gowns for her S/S 2012 collection.

One of the stunners that caught my eye instantly is the yellow/saffron mermaid cut dress above. Simple and understated elegance with some ruching throughout it is the perfect understanding of the definition of classy. Another runway favorite I have is the floor sweeping tie-dyed blue ball gown dress. For many industry folks, a tie-dyed dress may be fashion suicide specially sending it as the closing look for New York Fashion Week, but I have to disagree on the basis that the final finished product is stunning and well executed. For me the combination of white and multiple shades of blue is refreshing and great for a red carpet event during the spring and summer seasons.

Now touching on the RTW, one of the obvious favorite is the yellow trench inspired wrap dress with black lace details on the front. Another piece I fell in love with is the men's wear inspired ankle cropped tuxedo trousers with the complimenting jacket. I find it stunning and sexy when masculine menswear can be translated and executed well into a strong feminine womenswear but with the same impeccable tailoring.

I'm certainly looking forward to NYFW F/W 2012 and what Monique Lhuillier has in stored for the fashion world. Stay tuned for the upcoming season.

VLOV by Qing Qing Wu : S/S 2012

Debuting his collection in New York Fashion Week was a well planned risk for Chinese designer Qing Qing Wu and his label VLOV. Before I go into the clothes I do have to mention the amazing treatment I received from the VLOV company especially from their CFO. As I scurried to try and get an invite for the show I was sure to get a decline response considering it was 2 days prior to the actual date that I got in contact with VLOV for an RSVP, but to my surprise the CFO of the company contacted me personally and he made sure I can get an invite even though the list was closed. So for that I am fashionably in his debt.
I am pleasantly surprised that VLOV took fashion out of the proverbial box and put a unique spin on classic men's pieces like the one button and the double breasted suits, and used lightweight fabrics that still held a structured silhouette like commonly used textiles for men's suits. Below is one of my favorite pieces of the collection. The lightweight material lends a spring/summer feel to the slim low cut suit paired with shorts; with an oversized lapel and hidden button the piece is clean yet chic. In summation: lightweight fabrics, amazing tailoring, and cool modern design all fit a great fashionable puzzle.

Venexiana by Kati Stern: S/S 2012

Season after season Kati Stern manages to bring unto the runway the most exquisite gowns and cocktail dresses for Venexiana, and during fashion week for Spring/Summer 2012 was no exception. Stunning metallics and well crafted draping with body hugging silhouettes came down the runway amidst the crowd's awe and amazement. Several pieces were a definite contender for major red carpet events, and one would not be surprised if celebrities grace the Emmy's, Oscars, and Grammy's in a Venexiana gown. Obviously, one of my favorite piece from the collection is the dress below, a shear and cream leaf cut out lace mermaid cut dress, highlighted with a silk and tulle train. The silhouette to this dress is understated sexy, body hugging but classy and not too revealing. Other note worthy dresses and the definite crowd pleasers were the metallic pieces, goddess like and stunning. Against the light the flexes of gold shimmered with perfection and the way the they moved was eye catchingly beautiful. Kati Stern ran the entire color gamit for Venexiana S/S 2012 and from one end of the spectrum to the other each piece was visually delicious, I am anticipating seeing these on the red carpet coming up shortly.

Shamask Returns to the Tents!!!

Fluid silhouettes and impeccable pleating details usher in the return of Shamask to New York Fashion Week and the coveted tents. With vivid color blocking colors in rich fabrics each ensemble is a fine example of luxurious spring and summer wear, a must have for any 'Hamptons' regular, or on a holiday to Saint Tropez. There is a casual chicness in the pieces and wearability is a smart direction where many designers can never pass specially during a down turn economy. Although Shamask delivers outstanding cuts and tailoring, with fluid jackets juxtaposed with structured pieces, everything still transitions from runway to everyday easily and still look high end.

Cold weather is at the doorstep, but I'm still resisting the whole heavy coat ensemble. It's Autumn and the weather is definitely unpredictable but a good chunky knit ( by Diesel Black Gold) specially with a hood is a wonderful alternative to carrying a heavy jacket. I like accessorizing with tone on tone, so black accessories is my usual go to pieces when wearing dark colors. From Calvin Klein bottle shaped sunglasses, to Armani Exchange leather/metal cuff, to my vintage consignment store find dragon medallion necklace. Other pieces of the outfit includes a distressed slim fit jeans by Bullhead and vneck tee (both from Pac Sun) and studded buckle boots by Aldo.

After a brief hiatus, I am returning my blog to re-focus on outfit of the day along with my fashion coverage. Today's kid's birthday party outfit was centered around this great vintage leather trench jacket- 70's inspired oversized collar and wide belt detail, a great consignment store find! My weekly sunglasses hunt led me to this Marc by Marc Jacobs dark tortoise shell shades (sorry not vintage). Faux Fur stole is by HM Fall 2011 (I also have the one from last year). Cinnamon color v-neck shirt and button down both by Gap, and distressed slim fit jeans by ZARA MAN. The western inspired boots by Aldo and the necklace by HM.

Inspired by the Greek Key, Elene Cassis Spring / Summer 2012 is reminiscent of the 60's but with a wonderful modern edge. The silhouettes are romantically nostalgic of some of the wardrobe First Lady Jackie Kennedy O' wore during her media and political appearances. Elene Cassis captured the understated elegance that Jackie O was known for. Several pieces were definitely geared towards the 'modern, powerful, career driven, independent' woman; a woman who can run a Fortune 500 company, but at the end of the day look chic as she shops Madison Avenue. Clean structured silhouettes with shorter hemlines juxtapose career and sexy amazingly.

Lela Rose S/S 2012: Splashes of Beauty

Vibrant, feminine, and yet powerful are all quintessential descriptions for designer Lela Rose. Inspired by the "Neon Graveyard" ( unrestored and broken neon signs that fill the Las Vegas and Coney Island landscape), Lela Rose Spring / Summer 2012 collection diffused some of the brightest neon colors into a soft pastel like hue to simulate how neons would fade overtime. Similar to a finely crafted painting, silks, organza, tulle, and cottons were all the canvases taking in colors such as faded lemon, periwinkle, and neon tangerine. Statement pieces in the collection reflected a wonderful watercolor painting. I'm particularly in love with the khaki double faced jacket interior lined in the neon orange and paired with a blocked knit and panelled short (picture below on left). Certainly, the collection was a wonderful marriage of soft faded hues and electrifying neons, a great story of what happens to the 'new' as time passes- all the while telling a wonderful story.

Definitely a continuing trend: denim jacket with leather sleeves

Yigal Azrouel S/S 2012 Menswear Collection explores utility with a whole new take, combining lightweight fabrics, graphic design, and sporty details. The collection focused on making pieces lightweight for summer but without sacrificing amazing and luxurious fabrics like wool, leather, and cotton twill. This season, the proportions and silhouettes were more relaxed and definitely youthful, but never losing any sophistication. I can't help but talk about my favorite piece of the entire collection (first photo) the distressed gray leather jacket paired with cream cotton twill drawsting pants. Something about the pieces speaks casual sophistication, an ensemble that can go from daytime wear, and directly into a fun night at a chic club or lounge. Overall, the entire collection was definetly about being bold but naturally 'cool' : effortless chic!

Project Runway alum Korto Momolu has taken her place in the fashion world with her signature prints and influences from her roots in Liberia, mixing with modern silhouettes while keeping true to her strong, sophisticated, and elegant woman. Her Spring / Summer 2012 collection explored the artistry of Japanese culture, from ways of the Samurai to the beauty of the Kimono. Korto's use of amazing prints on delicate silks juxtapose the structure of the Samurai's way way life, but definitely reflects the beauty and elegance of the kimono. One can't help love the draping on several pieces, with a little punch of color either thru the accessories or a thin belt to give it a bit of spice. I believe Korto defines sophisticated, chic, and elegance in the textiles and colors she uses; all the while making every piece comfortable and wearable thru her silhouettes. Korto Momolu may have not won Project Runway, but her success speaks volumes and is truly inspirational to all aspiring designers to keep fighting and to keep moving forward!!

MATAANO S/S 2012: Vibrant Tropical

Inspired by their visit to the island of St. Lucia, Mataano's designers used contemporary comfortable silhouettes with a nod to the 60's and 70's era. An explosion of vibrant colors and tropical prints ruled the Spring / Summer 2012 runway. I was particularly taken back, considering I was born in the islands. This collection took me back to a more laid back 'island' lifestyle, when people took the time to admire the flora all around and take time out of their day to enjoy the environment and the people- this collection exemplifies such an ease in life. Mataano's pallette this season simply brings a smile to one's face.

Francis Hendy S/S 2012 : Return to NYFW

After several years of absence from New York Fashion Week, Francis Hendy reclaims his throne with color infused 'caribe' inspired menswear. For the past couple of years Hendy has been absent from the New York circuit opting instead to show his collections in the Carribean and Canada, but now he brings a life of color and tropical inspiration for his Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Bursting with exotic prints, his casual pieces were definitely a statement on its own, but it was the quality tailoring of the suit separates that caught one's eye. I find it refreshing that a designer isn't afraid to punch colors into formal wear such as suits, I feel it gives it some versatility where one may wear it together for an amazing statement, but also wear the jacket and the pant separately paired with a muted piece for a daytime event. Welcome back Francis Hendy, but little do most people know- you never really left! With impeccable tailoring and a master craftsman it's no wonder why celebrities like Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rhianna, and the Black Eyed Peas continue to support Francis Hendy's style and creations.

Naeem Khan S/S 2012: Glamour!

An explosion of color sets the tone for Naeem Khan's Spring/Summer 2012 collection. From fuschias to saffron, to yellows and crimson, royal blue to floral prints, and on top add sparkles and glittering gold- all the ingredients needed for GLAMOUR!! Floor sweeping gowns in feather trims or simply fluid were all stunning with punches of shine and shimmer. What brings an amazing gown isn't by making it huge and over bearing, it's how the piece flatters the body, and every piece of this collection hugged the body in all the right places. Yet, one of the key pieces I fell in love with was the black and gold caftan piece, it had the right accent of glam, but most importantly it spoke comfort- it draped stunning on the model and one can see that it can be flattering on any body type. Absolutely, the closing dress was the 'big bang' in a color sea of fireworks, it had an eye catching asymmetrical one shoulder top with metallic fringes all around, and a well tailored ball gown skirt to compliment, it was BOLD in its own right and commanded attention with classic sublty.

Nomia S/S 2012 collection presented clean fluid lines with a retro color pallette color blocked in separate pieces. I have to admit I do like the monotone pieces both with the solid fabric and sheer layering. My favorite of the collection was the turquois pants paired with a brown sleeveless top. It seems fluid silhouettes are here to stay specially those nostalgic of the chic 70's era.

Jad Ghandour S/S 2012: Gold Jetsetter

Gold is the color of KINGS, and Jad Ghandour Spring / Summer 2012 collection speaks to royalty with gilded pieces ruling the runway presentation. From corsetted waistline, peakaboo cut outs on shimmering dresses, to an armour like ensemble with a bit of a 'naughty nautical' feel, to the barely there gold trunks each piece was super sexy! In this modern take I feel the collection speaks to the socialite 'jetsetter' going from his/her yacht, unto an amazing safari or tour of an exotic landscape, and off to dinner in a romantic chateau- and all she would need is this collection to change from one adventure to the next.

The baby tiger and lion in the beginning of the runway lends itself nicely to the exotic ambiance and feel of the collection, but not every piece was about the exotic cold feel of gold, in fact sevral key pieces were a wonderful array of soft 'red-carpet' worthy ensembles. In the dresses above it's amazing how Jad Ghandour makes gold feel so soft paired with silk satin as a bustline plate on one dress, and a shoulder detail with the silk blouse and tulle skirt.

Shimmering army jackets, floral print dresses, luxurious knit sweater dress, fluid separates, and amazing sexy lace detailed pieces all filled Rebecca Taylor's Spring/ Summer 2012 collection. The juxtaposition of sporty and sexy was clear in every piece, and the marriage of retro silhouette with modern tailoring was simply sensational. Certain pieces came with a 40's nostalgia while others re-live the chic 70's and 80's. Head to toe, accessories and shoes all by the designer work perfectly with each ensemble, the bags and shoes were 'KILLER' and to die for! What I enjoyed most was the effortless 'cool' of the collection, some pieces were simple, loose, and fluid, but with flexes of gold and shimmer it was also a definite eye catcher. I always find that when asymmetrical pieces are done in a fluid silhouette, it's so flattering on every shape and size because it hugs all the right plaes and hide all areas one might feel a bit insecure about- for every woman that's a great key to feeling cool and confident.

Creative Director, John Crocco, stays true to the original vision of Perry Ellis and continues the tradition of great American style. From rich linens to luxurious knit sweaters and color infused cardigans, classic American style was the mood for Perry Ellis Spring / Summer 2012 collection. A definite crowd pleaser, several colorful knits that came down the runway were simply a must have for spring. I seem to be biased and favor a great jacket paired with casual shorts or easy fit linen pants, it embodies what spring and summer brings- great EFFORTLESS style! Having the opportunity to see the collection upclose I can say with certainty that each piece can fit into any man's wardrobe, whether he prefers eye catching color, or muted comfortable pieces. Overall, whether one is in his 20's and jump starting his career, or in his 50's and at the top of his 'game', Perry Ellis is a wonderful addition to any wardrobe and ensemble, pieces that work for daytme leisure or an evening dinner with transitional ease.

Maru Jung and Dara Rosen from Pratt Institute, Rachel Pullman and Connie Weng from Rhode Island School of Design, Marlow Larson and Lorena Cuevas from Savannah College of Art and Design, and Amy Bittner and Jusil Carroll from Fashion Institute of Technology. Joy Cioci S/S 2012: Pastels, Fluid, Retro

Joy Cioci Spring/Summer 2012 Collection was a beautiful sea of fluid silhouettes and pastel hues, from canary yellows, heavenly cream, salmon pinks, and cloudy blues- of course with the punch of blacks and crimsons. The collection's retro 60's and 70's pallette lends to the overall feel of nostalgia. Ruffles and scallop detail finishes were successfully married with fluid silhouettes and it really came across elegant and beautiful. This collection is true to what spring defines- light, airy, and soft colors in bloom. My definite favorite of the collection is powdery blue ruffle dress, it's soft and has a feel of understated elegance which sums up the collection in full.

Partenering with HSN and DKNY, 6 courageous women military veterans shared their heart wrenching stories of trials and survival, and what they've been through post armed forces duties. The south courtyard at the Mercedes Benz fashion week tents was the sight of this amazing presentation. The crowd listened with a heavy heart as each of the 6 ladies told their stories of struggles from watching friends get killed in action to being raped by a fellow soldier, and when they turned to the country they faithfully served for help, they were simply DISMISSED!
Each lady was lovely in their designer ensemble, from Charlotte Ronson (worn by Jennifer Crane), Kardashian Collection for Sears (Christina Dibble), Carmen Marc Valvo (Ann Marie Faison), Bill Blass (Sarah Franson), Calvin Klein (Serena Hayden), and Donna Karan (Meredith Perry Smith).

Katya Leonovich S/S 2012: Denim with a Twist

Definite favorite look: men's jacket and shorts

Refreshingly innovative in silhouette, structure, and style Katya Leonovich Spring 2012 collection was an explosion of deconstructed denim and almost grafitti like fabrics- street art brought to life. It shows to prove that fashion doesn't have to be so serious and boring, fashion is about expressing our creativity and what makes us unique and different. Let's talk about my favorite look of the collection: the multi colored, football player print jacket paired with white leather shorts. The juxtaposition of colors against a monotone white fabric is like a painting masterpiece against a clean canvas- one is meant to notice the painting and not the canvas. In this case, this blazer is definitely the masterpiece!!

EMERSON S/S 2012..Light and Dark: powerful elegance.

Boston based designer Jackie Fraser-Swan takes Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week by storm, presenting a collection inspired by her interpretation of light and darkness while staying true to her 'powerful and free-spirited modern woman'. The designer explains her direction for the collection by stating, "Life can throw us a curve ball from time to time, and it's up to us to decide whether to go down the road to darkness or to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel."
Amazing dark silks and fabrics are juxtaposed along with light prints, all the while injected with hues of royal blue, purple, and silver. One of the most interesting piece was the black cocktail dress incased in a leather harness along the bust line and midsection (refer to picture above), I love the play on the contrast between the powerful and feminine. Throughout the collection I noticed the re-occuring theme of 'refined edginess' if at all possible, Emerson accomplished it well indeed! Finally, my favorite piece of the collection definitely has to be the one with the purple ostrich moto jacket with the spotted asymmetrical wrap skirt (look#13), I adore pieces that are both structured and fluid, a marriage of beautiful complement. Falguni & Shane Peacock S/S 2012: Color me Sexy

To think that I was simply going to miss this show would have simply been the stupidiest decision of my fashion career. By chance, a new friend Prutha Raithatha (donotshoeme.blogspot.com) and a long time friend of the designers asked me if I was going to see the show? At first I declined, but with a little push I decided to go (note FRONTROW left hand side)- and to this day it was one of the best decision of my FashionWeek life! The show was a myriad of eye candy, colors galore, exciting, innovative, and undeniably SEXY!
To say that I was 'blown away' is an understatement! From the long jersey dresses, to color and detail infused corsetted dresses, a rainbow of feathers, sequins, and leather harness, I didn't know wether to clap, tweet picts, or use my camera- it is always a breath of fresh air when designers can make you jump out of your seat in anticipation of the next look. With Falguni & Shane Peacock's Indian back ground combined with a rock-n-roll British aesthetic, it was a definite 'glam-rock' explosion on the runway. Usually, I would pick one or two pieces as a favorite in the collection, but in this case I simply can't. Every single piece that went out was innovative and so deliciously 'BAD-ASS'!
